The EC is funding a series
of 23 studies about the role of the fisheries sector in the economy of EU
coastal regions. The studies should be finalised in the third or fourth

The STECF has held its
last meeting in April. Special attention was given to presentations by Aaron
Hatcher on the role of subsidies in EU fisheries and by Pavel Salz about
the annual economic report 1998. The representatives of the EC have clearly
stressed again the importance of economic analysis to fisheries management.
The deadlines for project
proposals for DG XIV and the EC Fifth Framework Programme were in May/June.
We hope to include details of accepted projects in the next Bulletin issue.
